There is much to celebrate in the Christian life; even in the midst of the challenges that arise. In community life we face both joys and sorrows together knowing that God, the Living Presence, is always present and active in our lives.
Advent is now upon us! Here we turn the page to a new year in the Liturgical Calendar as Advent begins the next sacred cycle! We now leave the green of ordinary time and move into the blue of Advent.
Let’s take a look at the sacred cycle of the Christian year.
The first half of the liturgical year from Advent through Easter to Pentecost follows The Story of Jesus – his birth, baptism, healing ministry, his suffering, death, resurrection, ascension to heaven and the coming of his Spirit at Pentecost. There are colors of blue, white, gold, purple, red, and some more white and gold, and red to mark the various seasons of Christ's life on earth.
The next half of the year is The Story of the People of God. Here is where we as followers of Jesus live and follow his life. This second half is where we, in a sense, live out the life of Christ in our own lives in what is called a funny name: ‘ordinary time’ – as if following Jesus is ‘ordinary'; it is of course both ordinary and extra-ordinary in many ways. We do, however, follow Jesus throughout our ordinary lives in ordinary time. Ordinary Time is the color green to signify the growth of our spiritual lives.
So, we watch Jesus, learn, and experience the life of God in Jesus and then as the Children of God, the disciples of Jesus, we live out the life Christ modelled.
In a sense, our lifetime is a series of hinges or turning points on our spiritual journey. This cycle is not only seen in liturgical calendars (which are on sale for 2025 in the Narthex), but we must keep in mind that this cycle is also the sacred cycle of our souls. I wonder what is happening in the sacred cycle of your soul at this time. I am available if you would like a cup of coffee/tea to have a conversation. God bless you this Advent as we open our hearts and lives to the coming again of Christ, our friend, helper, and healer.
St. Thomas has been on a community discernment process to develop a 5-year plan. The plan focuses on St. Thomas Community Life, Community Outreach, Spiritual Formation, and Future Development. We shared 4 weeks of coffee & conversation Sundays after church to listen, share, and collect surveys. We are excited about the outcomes of this project and will soon be launching the plan and a stewardship forecast. If you have any likes, concerns, or dreams to contribute, drop us an email, join a service, or stop by for coffee/tea at the office. The 5-year plan is now in print! Come get your copy.
